Achievements and Advancements
- India had many skilled painters who created amazing works of art
- Paintings were colorful and clear and colorful
- Wrote one of the longest literary works ever written called the Mahabharata
- Indians created the science of metallurgy where you work with metals
- Also knew the process for mixing metals to create alloys
- The numbers we use today are called Hindu-Arabic numerals because they were created by the Indians and brought to Europe by Arabs
- First people to create the zero
- Wrote medical knowledge down in AD 100s
- Doctors could cure diseased people and keep them healthy using inoculation, which is the practice of injecting a person with a small dose of a virus to help him or her develop a defense to the disease
- Indians knew 7 of the 9 planets in the solar system, knew the sum was a star and all the planets revolved around it, and were able to predict eclipses of the sun and moon
Architecture
- Harappa and Mohenjo Daro were both built with defense in mind
- Streets intersected on 90 degree angles lined with shops, markets, and homes
- The first temples were small stone structures with one or two rooms and flat roofs
- The temples all had detailed artwork
