Quick History of the Indus River Valley
- The civilization the developed along the Indus River is called the Harappan Civilization
- Harappa thrived between 2300 and 1700 BC
- Harappan controlled land on both sides of the river with little settlements scattered across both sides of the river
- The largest cities were Harappa and Mohejo Daro
- Mesopotamia had most contact with other people in the form of trade
- Aryans arrived to India in the 2000s BC
- Aryans then spread east and south into the Ganges River Valley
- Candragupta Maurya rose to power in the 320s BC
- Candragupta Maurya decided to become a Jainist monk in 301 BC, and to do so he had to give up his throne
- Candragupta's grandson Asoka became king aroun 270 BC
- Asoka converted to Buddhism and started to campaign for it in and around India
- Asoka dies in 233 BC, and his empire began to fall apart soon there after
- The last Mauryan king was killed in 184 BC, and India divided back into smaller states
- The Gupta dynasty began ruling India in AD 320
- The first Gupta ruler was Candragupta I
- The Guptas were Hindu, but still supported Buddhism
- Candragupta II took the throne in 375
- Gupta rulers created strict social laws to keep society in-line '
- Gupta rule remained strong until the 400s when the Huns attacked India and drained them of their money and resources
