Chinese Clothing and Family Life
- Kids lived with their parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and cousins
- Children were always well taken care of
- If your family was poor, adults and teenagers would need to work in the fields
- Boys grew up in their same house their entire life until the day they die
- Daughters were required to move in with their husband and do anything their mother-in-law wants them to do
- The oldest people in the home were in charge until they died
- It was believed that even after elders died, they would continue to live as spirits and watch over the home
- Poor people wore clothing made of hemp that was durable and good for working in the fields
- The upper class wore long silk robes
- Only high class people could wear silk and if you weren't one of those people and you wore silk, you could be punished
- The emperor was the only person allowed to wear yellow
- People wearing white symbolized loss and mourning, and red was worn to show joy and happiness
- Men wore their hair in a knot on the top of their head covered with a square cloth or hat
- Women wore their hair braided into various styles
