Mesopotamian Religion and Beliefs
- Religion was the center of Mesopotamian society
- Sumerians practiced polytheism (the worship of many gods)
- Each city-state had one god that was considered to be it's protector
- Sumerians believed that their gods had enormous powers that were unimaginable
- According to Sumerians, success in life depended on pleasing the gods
- All Sumerians were required to serve and worship the gods daily
- Priests had a high place in society and were very well treated
- People needed priests to help them gain the gods' favor
- Priests performed religious ceremonies in special buildings called ziggurats where they made offerings to the gods
